High School For Global Citizenship
Global Kids is a very significant component of the Chancellor's effort to make sure that every school in the Department of Education is an excellent one.

NYC Regional Superintendent

Founded by Global Kids and Principal Brad Haggerty in September 2004, the High School for Global Citizenship (HSGC) is an innovative small high school in Brooklyn that aims to create a community of active learners who are engaged participants in the democratic process and are learning about foreign policy issues and the connections between their personal lives and international events.

Based on Global Kids' unique approach and methodology, HSGC delivers an educational experience that is academically rigorous and student-centered. Students enroll in challenging courses that prepare them to take and pass all New York State mandated Regents examinations, as well as meet the requirements for admission to competitive colleges.

Courses are designed with a goal of maximizing cross-curricular connections around the theme of global citizenship. In addition to traditional coursework, students have the opportunity to participate in a number of core learning experiences during their years at HSGC, including a range of Global Kids' programs; a multi-day retreat before the official school year begins; numerous field trips to international organizations and cultural institutions; an annual youth conference; an internship program; and an annual Global Citizenship Week. Furthermore, an advisory program creates a high level of personalization and ensures that every student at HSGC is well known by at least one teacher.

While the school is nonselective and serves youth primarily from the surrounding community, HSGC has been identified by leaders at the Department of Education as a leading laboratory for international education and youth leadership development. To date, the school has achieved:

  • A 91% daily attendance rate (second highest among high schools in Region 6).
  • An 81% rate of promotion to grade ten (compared to the citywide average of 72%) and a 98% retention rate.
  • An 87% passing rate of students taking the January 2006 Math A Regents Exam.

HSGC is located on the Prospect Heights campus at 883 Classon Avenue in Brooklyn (across from the newly renovated Brooklyn Museum of Art and Botanic Gardens).
